#267: There's Nothing Quite Like Family (Conflict)

Serial & NYT recount one family's ordeal during those "trying times" we were all in.

Family.

We've all got one, and if you're keeping up on your Vin Diesel memes you'll know that nothing in this world is stronger than F-A-M-I-L-Y.

Some of you also know firsthand that family can get complicated. You also might know that there was no time more complicated for a family than during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We're not looking for you to declare what you believe or what side of whatever issue you're on. The only recommendation here is that you give We Were Three a listen and reflect on how fragile things can be, especially when facts are put out of reach and when a public health system fails in incredible ways.

This three-episode series has a knack for washing over you, so you're bound to binge it. Rachel McKibbens pieces together the fleeting moments of her brother's and father's final days by making sense of their text messages to and from family and friends.

The mistrust of the American medical system shines through every exchange, driving Rachel to re-discover who her father and her brother really were and what they were doing to cope with a virus as it spreads throughout their bodies.

Host Nancy Updike does well to remind us that the skepticism and doubt around the US medical system are valid. It has failed time and time again for people from all walks of American life.

However, the assertion that the US medical system is shaped by profit-seeking? Well, that is impossible to argue against. Unfortunately, quality patient care doesn't align with those profits – at-large and at the height of a once-in-a-century viral pandemic.

There's nothing quite like the undertones of a Serial Productions podcast theme. When that kicks in, you can't help but feel like We Were Three will take you on a ride. Updike does just that with this story about a family affected by COVID, what it destroyed, and what it also revealed.

Have a listen and share what you think.
