Where is Cleo? A sister’s heart-wrenching search for the truth
In the 1970s, a Northern Saskatchewan Cree family had its children stolen away by Canadian child welfare workers and split up amongst adoptive families. One of those kids, Cleo, went to a home somewhere in the United-States, and while trying to hitchhike back to Canada, she was raped, and murdered.
And that’s all anyone in her birth family knows.
With the help of CBC journalist Connie Walker, Cleo’s sister Christine is on the hunt to find out more about what really happened. To do so, she needs to fight for information that governments on both sides of the border don’t make it easy to obtain.
This story is not an easy one to listen to; every time she speaks, you hear the longing and heartbreak in Christine’s voice. Her interactions with government officials are often frustrating, infuriating even. But this is a story that needs to be told… if only because there are so many others just like it that never will be.
