The War on Drugs. No, not the indie band, the literal war on drugs. You might know it from the news, political speeches, or a Netflix documentary. But do you know how it all started?

Do you know of its origins in the '80s? Do you know how politics influenced drug laws? Do you know that crack cocaine and powdered cocaine were treated extremely differently under these regulations? Or that it fundamentally shifted how police interacted with the African American community?

The answers to these questions come courtesy of journalist Christopher Johnson, in his podcast 100:1 The Crack Legacy. From 2017, this podcast isn’t new, but hasn’t gotten the love it deserves.

This isn’t your high school history lesson. Johnson talks to people who were in the room when these laws were being written, people in police cars who had to enact them, and people on the streets who saw the consequences. And let me tell you, it wasn’t a pretty story for any of them.

Hope you enjoy it.
