ā€œMy father is Keith Hunter Jesperson. Heā€™s known as the Happy Face serial killer.ā€

Itā€™s about at this point ā€” the end of the opening dialogue ā€” that listeners will realize that Happy Face, a new podcast from How Stuff Works, is something special.

When talking about murder, we so often hear from the victimā€™s families that listening to a member of the killerā€™s family is immediately shocking.

In this case, Jespersonā€™s daughter, Melissa Moore, starts sharing these intimate details of growing up in a household with someone who wasnā€™t quite right. Jesperson was simultaneously a loving father and provider, and someone people were intimidated by or scared of. He would occasionally do twisted, strange things, but would get a free pass because that was just Keith being Keith.

You always wonder with serial killers how the family didnā€™t know, but Moore does a good job of describing just how unclear things can be when youā€™re talking about someone you loveā€¦ someone who gave you your DNA. Youā€™ll be glued to her every word.

Have a listen and let us know what you think,
