Since the 1970s, gay men in the City of Toronto, especially men of color, have gone missing. Police would investigate, for a time, but cases were almost always dropped, the stories of these missing men relegated to the archives.

That is until January of 2018, when Toronto police arrested landscaper Bruce McArthur. The 66-year-old has since pled guilty to eight charges of first-degree murder, and is serving a life sentence in a Canadian prison.

The third season of CBC’s Uncover podcast, dubbed The Village, looks at the case of McArthur and everything leading up to his arrest. But it goes beyond that, asking how this was allowed to happen to so many innocent men, for so many years? How could a serial killer be permitted to walk the streets? Why were police not doing more?

Journalist Justin Ling has been working on the story for years and it’s one he is very familiar with, because it happened in his own community. For the podcast, he interviews friends and family members of the victims, members of the local LGBT community, and others affected by the situation. He uses their stories to paint a picture of just how terrifying, how unfair, and how incomprehensible the entire situation was.

Have a listen and let us know what you think.
