What’s your idea of a utopia? Mine would probably be a peaceful place in nature where I could spend a lot of my time fishing. But some of you likely read that and furrow your brow, wondering why my utopia doesn’t involve champagne and luxury travel. Others still would probably (rightly) chide me for not focusing on world peace.

The point is, we all have a different idea of what would be the “perfect” place. Which is a big part of why none of the many people who have tried to build a utopia in the last few hundred years have succeeded. Still, there’s a lot we can learn from their attempts.

Nice Try! Is a brand new podcast from Curbed about the “hidden stories behind how we design the world we live in, and what we can learn when those designs fail.” The first season is focused on utopias — the idealism that drives us to seek them out, and the reasons why past attempts to create them have floundered.

From a suburb outside Philadelphia to a self-sustaining community in the desert, the podcast does a beautiful job of telling these lesser-known stories.

Have a listen and let us know what you think.
