"Humpback Whale Song of the Summer." "Rats and Humans — A Love Story." "The Zombie Mice of Marion Island."

No, these aren't the titles of new Bon Iver songs; They're some of the very first episodes of the new podcast Overheard at National Geographic. The podcast is intended to give listeners a quick inside scoop on the most interesting stories being pursued by journalists of the famous nature magazine. It delivers in spades.

If you’ve ever watched the TV show Planet Earth, you know just how gripping nature can be, especially when given a narrator and a narrative. While this podcast might not have the vocal talents of the incomparable David Attenborough, the tales are gripping and paint such a clear picture that you won’t be left wishing for video.

The episodes are really quite quick, coming in at around 15 minutes on average. But that’s all the time they need to tell a great story from some unseen, unappreciated part of our planet — leaving you to imagine the rest.

Have a listen and let us know what you think.

“You are literally looking at a bird that has been scalped. The entire back of its head and the entire neck has been eaten away.”
