#133 March 9, 2020 [My Year in Mensa]
[Podcast] Smart enough to join Mensa. And smart enough to leave it.
Mensa is basically a smart people club. You need to earn a score above 132 on an IQ test in order to be eligible, and then pay an annual due to have access to events and whatever other obtuse benefits come with membership. Comedian Jamie Loftus initially did the test intending to make fun of what she saw as an entire organization dedicated to casually bringing up your intelligence in conversations. When she wrote an online column about her experience passing the test, she earned significant abuse online for her views on Mensa. So she did what any creative millennial would do: she started a podcast about it.
While Loftus did find that Mensa was a strange, problematic community, it definitely wasn’t in the ways she expected. And the outcome of her little experiment took a far greater personal toll than anticipated.Even if you don’t care about Mensa, Loftus is hilarious. In the first episode alone, you can enjoy lines like:
“I received what most women would consider the ‘starter pack’ of online harassment.”
“At this time, I didn’t know that Mensa meant “stupid lady” in Spanish.”
“My stupidest ex could get into Mensa, and he is dumb.”
Have a listen and let us know what you think.
