A beating at the hands of Italian customs officers. A stint in Mexican jail. Poverty and defeat. These are just some of the trials Amir Omidvar faced while trying to start a new life in North America.

He left Iran in 1982 during the revolutionary crisis, seeking safety and opportunity. That proved to be far easier said than done. And yet, he kept working hard and hoping that things would turn out alright.

In the midst of this seemingly endless pandemic, a story of hope and determination might just be exactly what we need.The Hopeful is a beautiful, though heart-wrenching story. The podcast sees Omidvar tell his story to his daughter Shayda — so even though it isn’t easy to hear his troubles, the happy ending is always there, built into the narrative.
