In April 2018 we featured Connie Walker's previous work, Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo, as our podcast of the week. That edition of the newsletter closed with a painful truth: "...this is a story that needs to be told… if only because there are so many others just like it that never will be."

This is another story just like it but that statement remains true.

This time around, Connie Walker continues to advocate for Indigenous women's rights while also pushing to un-skew the perception of Indigenous people, much of which has been damaged thanks to old media and popular culture.

Stolen: The Search for Jermain is as much an exposé of the handling of Jermain Charlo's disappearance and the ensuing police investigation as it is a serious plea for acknowledgement and empathy.

The pattern surrounding Indigenous women continues with shocking regularity: disappearance, assault, and sex-trafficking while the typical police response is inadequate. There is a deep-seated and institutionalized problem with how people's origins are valued, especially when those people come from First Nations and Indigenous communities across North America.
