In 2017, a man named "Franco A" was outed as a member of a hidden network of far-right extremists subscribed to an ideology that is really getting old: that a nation's borders are too porous, and that those who do not come from our nation are dangerous and must be wiped out.

In recent years, populists around the world have found it easier to show their true selves, but this story brings another ripple: "Franco A" was a German national posing as a Syrian refugee with an elaborate plot that included a kill-list of activists and politicians whose deaths would lead to the dissolution of public order and overthrow liberal democracy in Germany.

All this came to the forefront and made international headlines once he tried to retrieve a firearm he had stashed in the toilet at Vienna's airport.

Oh, he also became the first active-duty soldier to stand trial for plotting terrorism since WW2.

That's right, "Franco A" was a member of the German military who posed as a refugee in an attempt to ignite a terrorist movement and he wasn't alone. What's more is that German authorities were oblivious to it all thanks to the clandestine meetings of a shadow army that includes soldiers, police officers and like-minded civilians.

Their goal? Day X

Day X represents the end of democratic order where an attack on some of the most vital pieces of society's infrastructure spurs the collapse of democratic society.

With a national identity as fragile as Germany's, the exposure of a right-wing terror cell within their armed forces including the Kommando Spezialkräfte, or KSK (Germany's elite special forces) is alarming to say the least.

"Franco A"'s trial started last month and there is an awful lot to make sense of. Day X is a good place to start.
