Here’s something that might shock you: Grunge music is more than just Kurt Cobain.

And, perhaps to gain credibility or appease grunge purists, the opening episode of Breaking Waves: Seattle isn’t about Kurt Cobain and his 1994 death. Instead, we’re taken to 1990 when Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone died from a heroin overdose while on the cusp of massive, international stardom.

Interviews from music historians and experts craft a healthy dose of nostalgia for anyone old enough to have been around in the late ‘80s and 1990s.

If you're too young to stake your claim on the era, you'll still enjoy hearing about the scene that defined a generation and influenced the ones that followed.

And, if you're not a fan of a music genre that came together a generation ago, get drawn in by how some believe the Pacific Northwest's persistent rain created a dampness on guitar strings responsible for the moody, darker, grungy sound we all know; or how Sub Pop Records only really exists because of the commercial success of Nirvana's debut album Bleach.
