Let’s get this out of the way first – a podcast with the production value of a feature film while being touted as a “podcast movie” is a little out there by conventional podcast standards. Then we remembered H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds and how it started as an audio drama broadcast over far-reaching radio waves of a bygone era.

Luckily, Ghostwriter doesn’t have to rely on terrestrial radio to reach people looking for their next captivating thriller. It benefits from a couple of established Hollywood stars with the likes of Kate Mara and Adam Scott as your marquee headliners. As it turns out, they both have phenomenal voices that keep you wondering about what waits around the corner throughout the 80-minute feature.

Kate, a former big-city journalist who hasn't left her apartment in years seems reluctant to accept a gig ghostwriting a book for a wealthy and eccentric author. The author, James, has the beginnings of a story in mind and employs Kate to flesh out something better than your average whodunnit.

As the two collaborate over phone calls, they each begin to reveal more and more about each other. With each passing call, we get to learn more about what makes them tick, what their novel means to them, and what inspires the story they're looking to tell.

As a listener, we get to pick up on suspicions and clues littered throughout the characters' interactions. Clever audio engineering prompts you to inch farther and deeper into this immersive and frightful world meant only for your ears.
