What better way to close out the year than with a little true crime? There's a reason why true crime resonates so strongly with people but we're not here to figure out why. We'll simply get out of the way and introduce you to The Real Killer; a blow-by-blow retelling of what happened in St. Louis on April 27th 1982, and the aftermath that followed.

On that date, JoAnn Tate was murdered in front of her daughters, Melissa and Renee. Both the girls were left severely wounded after a brutal attack. Melissa went on to insist that a man named Bill was responsible. When Bill couldn't be found, JoAnn's boyfriend Rodney Lincoln was identified as the killer and convicted. He was sentenced to life plus 15 years for manslaughter and 1st-degree assault.

Lincoln maintained his innocence for 36 years and up until the point where he was freed in 2018. His freeing came after several turns in the case, one of which was Melissa's 2015 recant of her previous testimony. So, it begs the question – who killed JoAnn Tate?

Host Leah Rothman is a seasoned investigative reporter. She walks listeners through the evidence and interviews gathered in the years since the murder and assault. There's a strong sense that Rothman has poured over evidence logs time and time again, trying to piece this baffling case together.

Rothman admits pretty early on that she hasn't been able to shake this case since delving into it. One outcome of her obsession is this 11-episode podcast filled with raw retellings from Melissa, Rodney Lincoln and others captivated by the case of JoAnn Tate's murder.
