#227 January 10th, 2022 [The Last Movie Ever Made: The Don't Look Up podcast]
If You're Over Podcasts, Don't Look Up ☄️
Movie buffs unite! What was once a DVD commentary track is now a full-on podcast. Lucky for us, the behind-the-scenes listen all about Don't Look Up is thorough and more than just people talking while watching a movie.
What makes for a fun companion podcast leads to a grounding exposé into Adam McKay's life journey. Starting with his days at SNL, touching on some comedy genius (see: The Landlord, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers) all the way through his foray into truly serious stories like The Big Short and Vice. Oh, and HBO's Succession.
All that before a sharp turn to how this was The Last Movie Ever Made, or at least that's what Adam McKay believed as he was making it.
If that isn't enough to (re)fuel a mild existential crisis, give David Wallis Wells' "The Uninhabitable Earth" a read. For McKay, it sparked an incessant fascination for all the dreadful ways Earth can meet its demise and ultimately led to a unique and entertaining movie and this fascinating behind-the-scenes podcast.
Give this show some of your time for an oddly delicate unravelling of what McKay put into writing, producing and directing the movie – how his private idiosyncrasies and fears of the world's end fuelled him through everything.
Everything, in this instance, includes the effects of COVID-19 on the planet and the psyche of a movie's cast. It includes the uncanny parallels between things like the fictitious President Orlean (played by the singular Meryl Streep) and her real-world counterpart. It includes choreographing the telling of the end of the world while many at the time thought the world was, well... ending.
