#229 January 24th, 2022 [Sorry About The Kid]
30 Years Ago, Trauma and Memory Collided Changing Everything for One Family
Alex McKinnon opens up to share decades of his deeply personal grief on Sorry About The Kid; a sober revisiting of the fatal incident that took the life of his 14-year-old brother in 1990.
Paul McKinnon was leaving Montreal's Loyola High School and crossed the street to get to his school bus. He was hit and killed by a speeding police cruiser and became the fourth person to be killed by a police car in the city that year.
In the four-episode series, we hear from Alex as he works to actively process the grief that he, his family, and the local community were all affected and profoundly burdened by.
One of the ways Alex tries to work through the grief is by exploring fleeting childhood memories with his therapist Yvonne, who was actually a witness to Paul's death.
There's no single way to process grief. For some like Alex, it can take decades to even consider it. Others, like Paul and Alex's mother, may hold onto their grief and instead seek vengeance through the courts and retribution for those responsible; in this case the then-rookie police officer Serge Markovic.
Grief is messy and when that grief is connected to death there are equally messy ripple effects that can reveal themselves in many ways and as time moves on. Sorry About The Kid captures some of those ripple effects, commemorates the young life that was lost, and articulates one of the many ways to grieve.
