On May 13, 1985, an event took place that remains one of the most inhumane instances of racially-motivated police brutality in American history.

The Philadelphia police department, during an armed standoff with the MOVE organization, dropped a bomb from a helicopter onto the roof of the MOVE residence. The bomb ignited a fire that quickly spread and destroyed over 60 homes in the West Philadelphia neighborhood.

In case that wasn’t clear, Philly cops dropped a bomb on a Black home.

The Africas were a large, close-knit family, made up of ten siblings ranging in age from 15 to 27. They were revolutionaries who formed a collective of artists, rebels, and entrepreneurs, and were known for their collaborative efforts that advocated for nature laws and natural living.

This act of targeted police violence resulted in the death of six adults and five children, all members of MOVE’s Africa family.

With The Africas VS. America, uncover the rarely talked about tragedy in American history and gain a deeper understanding of the concept of Black Power and Black Liberation. Wrap your head around the effects of the ever-present systemic racism and the far-reaching consequences of the 1985 bombing.

Host Matthew Amha guides us through a seven-part documentary about the lead-up and aftermath of one of the greatest atrocities in American history. It starts with the repulsive discovery of what was being done with the Africas remains and takes hold of you once you hear those first few phrases.

By exploring the viscous realities of institutional racism and the perpetual failings of law enforcement, The Africas VS. America adds perspective, commentary, and evidence to the recurring struggles of being Black in America.
