#308: It's Time to Pay Up
Your starting point for thoughtful discourse and the real terms of reparations.
On Tuesday, a historic proclamation was signed by President Biden establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument. The monument is located across three sites in Illinois and Mississippi and honors Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley.
Emmett Till was a 14-year-old Black boy who was abducted, tortured, and lynched in 1955. Once his body was retrieved from the Tallahatchie River, Mamie Till-Mobley insisted on a public funeral with an open casket.
Her decision showcased the brutal treatment and beating Till withstood at the hands of barbaric racists, something far too common in the Jim Crow-era South.
This is one vivid and current example that reinforces that the time for clear-eyed conversation about reparations is now. It is time for the African American community to experience honest healing and intentional reparation of a broken existence.

Still Paying the Price: Reparations in Real Terms pulls apart a deeply complex issue while keeping things honest, conversational and accessible.
With 14 episodes organized into themes like They Made History, Echoes of Enslavement, The Work of Preserving History, and Historical Injustices, you’re guaranteed an informative journey that will guide you through the maze of historical complexities and their modern-day implications.
What we end up with is an engaging platform for discussing the sometimes-counterintuitive realities of reparations, all the while effectively serving as an educational tool on the broad spectrum of economic, social, and racial issues involved.
Well-established historical injustices and systemic discrimination have denied wealth-building opportunities to Black Americans. Slavery, Jim Crow segregation, redlining, and discriminatory public policies have led to a very clear and very real racial wealth gap as well as disparities in education, housing, and business ownership.
For America, it’s time to pay what’s long overdue: the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
