Twins have a virtually unknowable bond.
In the case of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twin sisters who fought hard to belong in their small Welsh town, their alikeness led to isolation, arson, and an 11-year stint in Broadmoor Hospital; a British maximum-security facility for those pronounced “criminally insane”.
The only Black children in their school, the girls became known as "The Silent Twins" because they only communicated with each other in their own idiosyncratic language.
June: Voice of a Silent Twin gives June Gibbons the opportunity to share, in her own words, the story of her and her sister Jennifer and how they went on to become the youngest women in Broadmoor.
June details the impact of the bullying she and her sister endured while in school, how they would turn inward to themselves and their diaries, and just how their writing would be their ticket to fame and fortune; were it not for the tragic turn their lives took.
June: Voice of a Silent Twin is a complex story, but the important message is that not everyone has a voice or is treated equally in our world. The struggle to adapt underscores the complex nature of twin relationships and the challenges faced by individuals who do not fit into “typical societal norms”.
