#331: It's Complicated

There isn't a roadmap for navigating your trauma

While many of you may just be getting back from an extended stay with family, perhaps it’s not too early to start thinking about what your next family gathering will look like.

Documentary filmmaker, photographer, and now podcaster, Amanda Mustard has been exploring this topic for eight years while working on various projects, including her recently-released documentary, Great Photo, Lovely Life.

From that experience comes the independently produced Trauma Town, where Mustard guides us through candid conversations with friends and experts. Aiming to help other survivors of sexual assault and abuse, we're offered a glimpse into her journey to understand and process the various inflection points of trauma in her life and in her family's life.

For some, the privilege of belonging to a family might not be immediately obvious. For others, being involved in their family simply doesn’t work.

There’s no one way about it and there is definitely no way around it: Family requires individuals, and individuals are nuanced and often complicated. A family’s generational trauma, whenever present, imposes a real emotional and psychological burden on everyone it touches.

What gets unpacked in Trauma Town may not align with experiences in your own family, but one thing is certain – listening to Amanda Mustard's processing over five episodes sheds light on what it’s like to come to terms with the profound effects of specific trauma and the weight of a family’s secrets.

That’s something worth taking in.
