In 1947, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists began a countdown clock that tracked the threats all of humanity faces from unchecked scientific and technological advances.

It’s called the Doomsday Clock and, at the time of writing, it sits at 85 seconds to midnight.

What often gets lost in the metaphor is that the clock doesn’t stop necessarily at midnight.

Humanity crosses that threshold, and whatever comes next is simply the world after catastrophe. Different. Smaller. Stranger. But still a world.

Now imagine observing it all from above.

Everything we’ve wrapped up in life and death, from our desire to control our own destiny to the unsettling instinct that drives some people to prepare for their own demise, serves as the backdrop for the powerhouse of a podcast that is The Dolos Project.

From the crackling voice over the intercom declaring, “It’s time to wake up, David,” you know this isn’t your typical space odyssey.

The “what if?” at the heart of The Dolos Project isn’t new. But when rockets are launching with increasing regularity (except yours, Bezos), extraterrestrial bases are discussed as increasingly plausible, and the world feels like it’s being frog-marched toward the edge of its own existence, this particular fiction starts to feel uncomfortably real.
