A quarter of a century on and there still isn't a story that can be told about the September 11th terrorist attacks that simply isn't shocking.

If you were around for it, you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing, but there's more to that than just an adage.

When New York City was under attack and as the Twin Towers crumbled to the pavement below, the world was changed forever. There was a clear line that divided our shared experience into the before and the after, and the aftershocks are still being felt to this day.

In the years since, the wars that followed reshaped the Middle East, air travel changed for good, and an entire generation has grown up without ever knowing a version of the world before that Tuesday. And yet, 25 years later, some of the most basic questions about how those nineteen men pulled it off, and who helped them along the way, are still being argued out in federal court.

All to say, we all have a stake in understanding what led to the deadliest terrorist attacks in history. Instead of the macro view, though, the BBC's Intrigue: A 9/11 Story narrows in on the two young Saudis who played key roles in the attacks.

Reported by journalist Jane McMullen across ten episodes, the series leans on fresh material: the first interview with a neighbour who knew both the hijackers and the man suspected of helping them, plus an FBI agent who says his own inquiry kept hitting walls.

Their paths to hijacking the plane that crashed into the Pentagon were etched in around the turn of the century in San Diego, all with help from an enigmatic figure whose involvement has been kept under wraps by both the U.S. and Saudi governments.

The underlying question, though, is why are grieving families still searching for answers?
